Ohaus scales: software, connection and integration

Software for Ohaus scales – from connecting an Explorer analytical balance to the LIMS through to integrating Defender platform scales into goods receipt, dispatch and inventory management. Ohaus scales are widespread in laboratories, production and warehousing and almost always come with a serial or USB interface. We deliver the software that turns this into an automatic data flow.

What we do for Ohaus users

  • Capture weight values automatically – without retyping and transcription errors
  • Connect laboratory and precision balances to LIMS or recipe systems
  • Integrate industrial scales into goods receipt, picking and dispatch
  • Store and analyse weighing logs – supports tamper-proof archiving in line with GoBD
  • Bundle Ohaus devices together with scales from other manufacturers in one interface

Supported devices and series

Ohaus devices we regularly connect:

  • Defender 3000 / 5000 / 7000 with T31P, T51P, T71P or i-DT33P/i-D52P indicators: platform, floor and pallet scales
  • Ranger 3000 / 4000 / 7000: counting and compact scales for order picking and stocktaking
  • Explorer, Adventurer, Pioneer: analytical and precision balances for laboratory and QA
  • Scout, Navigator, Valor: portable and food scales for production and goods receipt
  • Courier: shipping scales for parcel and freight handling

Interfaces, connection and integration

Ohaus scales come with RS232 as standard and, depending on the model, USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; the protocols used are the Ohaus standard format and the device-specific print commands, and many models also understand SICS-compatible commands. We read the weight on request or once the reading is stable, control tare and zeroing, and transfer values together with article, order or sample ID into LIMS, inventory management, shipping system, Excel or a database.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ohaus scales be read out automatically?

Yes. Many Ohaus models – for instance from the Defender, Ranger or Explorer series – come with RS232, USB or Ethernet interfaces depending on their configuration. We provide the software that captures weight values automatically and transfers them into your systems without retyping.

Can several Ohaus scales be connected at one workstation at the same time?

Yes. Our software can address several scales in parallel – for instance a precision balance for small quantities and a platform scale for containers – and assign the values to the right process step.

We have an older Ohaus model without a network port – does it still work?

In most cases, yes. Older devices can be connected via the serial interface; where needed, serial-to-network adapters come into play.

Can you connect Ohaus laboratory balances to our LIMS or QA software?

Yes. Via the serial or USB interface we read out the weigh-in value once the reading is stable and pass it on with sample ID, operator and timestamp to the LIMS or QA database – no retyping. Find out more on our page on LIMS integration.

We have an Ohaus Defender scale in goods receipt – can the weight be transferred directly into our inventory management system?

Yes. The Defender indicator delivers weight and status; our software transfers the value directly into the goods receipt or dispatch line item of your inventory management system – JTL, Odoo, Sage or another system.
